the silent couple

Once upon a time there was a newly married couple. Still dressed in their bridal attire, they settled into their new home as soon as the last guest left.

_ Dear - said the young lady

_ Go close the door that leads to the street!

_ Close the door? I? - said the groom.

_ A groom in his splendid attire, with princely clothes and a dagger studded with stones? How could anyone expect me to do such a thing? You must be out of your mind. You go close it.

_ Oh yes? shouted the bride. _ You think I'm your slave? A beautiful and gentle creature like myself, who wears a dress of the finest silk, decked for my wedding day, going to close the door that opens onto a public road? Impossible!

They were silent for a minute or two, and the woman suggested that they could solve the problem with a bet. They agreed that the first one to speak would close the door.

There were two sofas in the house and the pair sat facing each other, looking at each other in silence. They stayed like that for two or three hours. Meanwhile, a band of thieves passed by and saw the open door.

They crept into the quiet, deserted-looking house and began to gather whatever objects they could carry. The bridal couple heard them enter, but each thought the other should take care of the matter.

Neither spoke nor moved as the thieves went from one room to the next, until finally they reached the living room and did not at first notice the somber, ecstatic duo.

However, the couple continued to sit while the thieves carried away all the valuables and rolled rugs under the couple's feet. Mistaking the idiot and his headstrong wife for wax mannequins, they stripped them of their jewels.

Even so, the pair remained mute.

The thieves left, and the bride and groom sat all night. At dawn, a policeman, on his beat, saw the door open and entered. Going from room to room, he finally reached the couple and asked them what had happened. Neither the man nor the woman deigned to answer.

The policeman called for reinforcements. Many defenders of the law arrived, and all grew more and more nervous in the face of the total silence that obviously seemed to them a calculated affront. The officer in charge finally lost control and ordered one of his men: _Give that man a slap or two to make him come to his senses.

At this, the woman could not contain herself:

_ Please, gentlemen guards – he whimpered – don't hit him. It's my husband!

_ I won! - immediately shouted the imbecile.

_ You will close the door!
